The W12 model is more than just an A8 with a V12 – all W12 models are four-seaters featuring a full-length rear center console with its own climate control system. The rear seats are heated and power-operated. These cars are loaded with (nearly) all options from the factory
The A8 rides on a similar platform as the VW Phaeton and Bentley Continental GT/Flying Spur. However, while the Phaeton and Bentley models use a steel structure, the A8 uses an aluminum spaceframe that is 670 lbs lighter
The W12 engine was essentially two VR6 engines joined together, driving a common crankshaft. The narrow-angle VR6 (15° offset between the cylinders) is already a compact engine – pairing two of them together gives the W12 a 72° offset between the two banks of 6 cylinders each. The brilliance behind the “W” design” is that a W12 engine takes up no more length than a VR6, as opposed to a regular V12 which has two rows of 6 cylinders each (quite long). The W12 is just 4 cylinders across and only 3 cylinders deep – this equates to 20 inches long, 28 inches high, and 28 inches wide. Dry weight is 540 lbs
Such compact dimensions allow Audi to pair the engine with AWD. V12 and AWD rarely coexist as there usually isn’t room to fit a front-wheel-drive differential in the engine bay. Believe it or not, the W12 is slightly smaller in some dimensions than the 4.2 V8 model
