- The Super V8 was the long-wheelbase variant of the XJR (essentially a supercharged “Vanden Plas”). Super V8s feature the same supercharged engine, Brembo brakes, styling, and wheel options as the XJR
- Compared to an XJR, the Super V8 employs a more comfortable ride quality thanks to a slightly softer suspension, as well as the longer wheelbase
- When released in 2005, this was the longest Jaguar ever made. A period Road and Track test claimed that even with the front seats moved all the way back, there was enough rear legroom for a 6ft 4″ journalist to sit comfortably
- It was also the most expensive vehicle in Jaguar’s lineup, requiring a $15k premium over the XJR. Super V8s came standard with Jaguar’s rear DVD entertainment system (screens in the headrests)
- What set these cars apart from the competition was Jaguar’s extensive use of aluminum – a Super V8 is over 500 lbs lighter than the same year BMW 7 Series (750li). Jaguar quotes a weight penalty of only 53 lbs over the short wheelbase XJR
- The supercharged V8 (AJ33S) features a forged steel crankshaft, forged fracture split rods, forged aluminum pistons, piston oil cooling jets, and a 2.0L Eaton supercharger (M112 Gen 5) pushing 13 psi of boost. Over 80% of peak torque is available from 1400 RPM (!) providing the effortless surge at throttle tip-in that supercharged Jags are known for
- While this generation of Jaguar cars was designed under Ford ownership, the XJ and XK are not Ford products (a common misconception). The XJ/XK are genuine Jaguar vehicles built in the Coventry, England plant and are powered by Jaguar-built engines (AJ-V8) composed of Jaguar parts (minus the supercharger -very few Ford parts exist on these cars). The only Jags built by Ford are the X type and S type
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of variable valve timing (VVT) added to all supercharged Jaguars. Also, the Brembo brakes are replaced with brakes by Teves
- 2007 saw virtually no changes
- 2008 was the mid-cycle facelift, with added exterior bodywork and a slightly updated interior
- 2009 marked the final year of production for the X350 generation
