- 1995 1/2 – 2004 generation represents the first Toyota truck bearing the Tacoma name. It was known as the Hilux in the rest of the world
- The 2.7-liter DOHC was the strongest 4-cyl in its class. This engine came standard on 4×4 models only (4×2’s came standard with the base 2.4)
- 4×4 Tacomas have a 6 lug wheel pattern, while the 2WD came with a 5 lug pattern
- 4 Cyl Tacomas featured a GCWR of 7,400 lbs and a payload capacity of 1,810 w/ manual trans. A tow package was available, giving the Tacoma a 5,000 lb tow rating
- The Tacoma’s frame is mostly fully boxed (only the section after the front leaf spring mount bracket is a c-frame). Also features a welded steel cab with a double-walled bed
- This is the final generation of Tacoma classified as a compact pickup. The bigger 2nd generation (2005+) is considered a mid-size pickup
Key Model Year Changes:
- Toyota dropped the optional flare-fender StepSide cargo box
- The biggest changes occurred back in 2001, when the Tacoma saw a facelift
- Very few changes occurred for this generation after 2001. 2005 brought an all new Tacoma
