- To send the C5 off with a bang, Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill’s goal was to make the ’04 Commemorative Edition Z06 the fastest Corvette ever around a track. This meant the Comm. Edition package couldn’t just be cosmetic – some chassis and suspension tuning was required to separate it from the rest of the C5’s
- A Z06 was sent to the Nürburgring to begin testing and development. The valving on the Sachs’ shocks were revised to lessen the impact of yaw and roll during tight corners. Ride/Handling Chassis Engineer Michael Neal said “We reshaped the force-velocity curve to give more control, but not at the expense of ride. What the customer feels, particularly on a racetrack, is a more poised car. He doesn’t have to wait for body roll to settle during transient maneuvers, so he can be aggressive hustling from one corner to another, particularly as they come in quicker succession.”
- In addition, stiffer upper control arm bushings and softer rear anti-roll bar bushings promote flatter handling and more stability on corner entry, helping reduce Corvette’s notorious desire to oversteer on corner exit. “If you want to fix oversteer at the back, you first need to fix it at the front of the corner,” says Neal. A smoother corner entry = reduced oversteer on corner exit
- Hill’s team also added a carbon-fiber hood (saving 10.6 lbs from the standard fiberglass hood). However, Hill didn’t want the carbon fiber “weave” to show through the unique paint scheme. The team decided to use a single-direction fiber construction designed to eliminate the usual waviness of carbon fiber parts, allowing the painted hood to match the rest of the car
- The hard work paid off. The Z06 Comm. Edition is the first Corvette to break the 8 min barrier at the Nurburgring, and the chassis tuning helped bump the 0-60 time down a tenth of a second to 3.9
