- 1998 was the first year of significant changes for the SC400, which is noticeably improved thanks to a new VVT (Variable Valve Timing) cylinder head and an all-new 5spd automatic (A650E) that replaces the 4spd auto used in previous years
- The 1UZ-FE V8 engine came from the LS400, and it could barely fit (requiring a different air filter assembly). However, Lexus loved the SC concept design so much that they were willing to rearrange (or even redesign) the front-end hardware to maintain the beautiful shape
- During development, for example, Lexus found that the nose (which has no grille) couldn’t provide enough air for the radiator. Rather than redesign the front end, Lexus developed an ultra powerful variable-speed hydraulic cooling fan (driven by a hydraulic pump on the accessory drive) to provide adequate engine cooling
- Another example: the slim front end didn’t allow the use of the company’s projector-beam headlight assembly. The solution? Split the low beams from the high beams. The inboard lights you see are the high beams, while the outboard lights are the main low beams
- While the Lexus SC also shared the double wishbone suspension from the A80 Supra, its tuning and geometry were geared more towards that of a GT car
- The long doors have special dual-pivot (articulating) hinges that push the entire door outward when opened, allowing rear passengers to exit and enter in tight parking spaces
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the VVT engine. Power is now bumped from 260hp to 290hp
- First year of the 5spd automatic transmission (replacing the 4spd). This new transmission features ECT-i (Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence) allowing for an auto-select shift system, communication with the engine, and increased flexibility of torque converter lockup
- Center console now uses authentic wood trim
- New electronic garage door opener
- Update gate shifter with wood shift knob
- Key remote now serves multiple functions
- New anti-theft system
- The following year (1999) received an updated stereo system, daytime running lights, larger brakes, and a new 3 spoke steering wheel
- 2000 models receive an On-board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system
- 2000 is the final year of the SC400
