  • The “K” designation refers to the 4×4 model (“C” refers to 2WD). Equipped with the 5.7L Vortec, 4×4 models have a towing capacity of 7,000 lbs
  • There were three versions of the 5spd available: V6 and 5.0L models received the light duty “MG5” transmission; 5.7L models under 8,600 GVWR (such as this example) received a slightly stronger “M50” transmission; all trucks with a GVWR of 8,600 or higher received the New Venture Gear 4500 unit (heavy duty “MW3”)
  • Signature traits of all Vortec engines include: sequential fuel injection, optimally designed intake runners and ports for maximum airflow, and a “fast burn” combustion chamber design that swirls the air/fuel mixture together for a more efficient burn
  • Two 6.5L diesel options were available, but these engines (along with the previous 6.2L) didn’t give GM the best reputation for diesels (these were before the Duramax was introduced in 2000)
  • Plagued with issues (mostly the 6.2L), common problems include cracking of the main bearing web and cylinder heads, crankshaft failure due to the harmonic balancer, overheating pump mounted driver (PMD), and an oil cooler line failure (these early lines were held together by a “C” clip at the engine block. When the clip fails, the engine loses its oil and seizes. There was no low oil pressure cutoff switch)
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Updated steering wheel
  • First year of the Passlock theft deterrent system. Truck will shutoff after startup if the correct key isn’t used, and the computer prevents it from starting for 10 minutes
  • 4L60e transmission now features a new two-piece case to reduce vibration
  • Both the 4L60e and 4L80e receive an electronically controlled torque converter clutch, as well as electronic line pressure software to adjust hydraulic pressure to the transmission on the fly. This improves shift feel
  • New lighter front half shafts (4×4) are much easier to remove/install
  • Pewter, Indigo Blue, and Copper metallic paint replace Stellar blue paint
  • New “low rolling resistance” tires improve fuel economy without sacrificing ride
