The TDS was the top diesel model in the 5 series range, with the “S” for “Sport”. The TDS has a few differences over the regular diesel model, most notably an intercooler. This reduces the intake charge temperature and allowing for a more aggressive engine tune without risking detonation
Unlike BMW’s previous turbodiesel engine (M21) this new M51 unit doesn’t require routine valve lash adjustment (thanks to hydraulic tappets)
While the E34 was the first 5 series to receive stability control (ASC) and traction control (ASC+T), both were excluded from the M5 model. Incorporating traction control with the M5’s individual throttle bodies was beyond the capability of the Bosch Motronic engine management system. In addition, ASC wasn’t yet designed to work with the M5’s 25% locking LSD
The E34 is also the first 5 Series to use a rack and pinion steering system
Rather than design the touring model after the sedan, BMW designed both cars alongside eachother. This helped the final Touring design appear more aesthetically natural, rather than “tacked on” to the sedan
