- After a 6 year absence, the “Flareside” bed makes a return on the 9th generation F-150. The Flareside is created by taking the rear fenders of a dual rear-wheel F-350 and mounting them on a single rear-wheel chassis
- The 9th generation gave birth to two icons: the turbocharged Powerstroke diesel and the Cobra-powered Lightning
- This is the final generation to use the 302 (5.0L) and 351 (5.8L) engines, as these motors would not be certified for 1996 OBD2 requirements
- This is also the last generation of the Twin I-beam (Twin Traction Beam for 4×4) front suspension. The 10th generation introduces fully independent front suspension
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the airbag steering wheel
- Air conditioning system is now R134a, replacing the old R12 freon
- The “Custom” trim is dropped
- Most changes in ’94 occurred on the options list, such as available CD player, security package, off-road package, etc
- The 9th generation F series was produced from 1992 to 1996
