- This is the first generation of 4Runner that could be ordered with 4 doors. It is also the first generation to take the shape of a genuine SUV, featuring a permanent steel roof (1991+) instead of the removable fiberglass shell/roll bar used on the older models
- One of the most unique traits about these cars is the exceptionally high floors. While they provide class-leading ground clearance, it makes for a distinctive seating position: “the layout of an unnaturally high floor demands an athletic climb into the cab and provides a low-seat, feet-straight-out driving position that feels odd at first.” – Car and Driver, 1991
- Another unique feature is the tailgate, which folds down like a pickup truck and features a retractable rear window. All of the competitors (Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Cherokee, Mitsubishi Montero, etc) came with a conventional upward-opening tailgate
- All 4Runners feature the same drivetrains offered on Toyota’s Hilux. The extra power of the V6 was a welcome option over the bulletproof but gutless 22RE 4 cylinder
- Unfortunately, the V6 (3VZ-E) came with inadequately designed head gaskets, forcing Toyota to extend the warranty for head gasket related failures. These updated gaskets (starting Oct 1994 for the 1995 model year) featured a more robust design and can be used on previous year 4Runners
- Regardless of engine, all 1991 4Runners are rated to tow 3,500 lbs, with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 7,800 lbs
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the full steel roof, replacing the removable fiberglass shell found on previous models
- A HELP indicator function is added to the radio’s anti-theft system. There is now a blinking red light to warn potential thieves of the anti-theft system
- Final year of the sealed beam headlights. The following year (1992) is upgraded to modular headlamps
- The following year (1992) saw a minor facelift with a new one-piece front bumper and new grille. The spare tire is now found underneath the rear of the car instead of hanging on the tailgate
- The 2 door model is discontinued in May of 1993
- In 1994, 4-wheel ABS arrived on V6 4Runners (previously rear wheel only). All 4Runners now feature a center high-mount brake light and side door guard beams
- 1995 saw minimal changes
- The 2nd generation 4Runner is sold from 1990 to 1995
