- This is the first year Porsche offered the 944 with a turbo. Adding a water cooled KKK turbocharger to the base 944 required Porsche to reduce the compression ratio to 8:1, as well as install an intercooler
- The transaxle came from the 924, but Porsche strengthened the gearbox, improved the gear ratios, and added a transmission oil cooler. The brakes were also upgraded to four-piston calipers
- The 944 Turbo is the first Porsche to offer identical power outputs in all markets. In the U.S, the restriction of a catalytic converter is offset by a slightly higher boost pressure and a re-tuned Bosch Motronic engine management system
- The 944’s aluminum 4cyl engine has twin counter rotating balance shafts derived from Porsche’s racing efforts. The shafts cancel out engine vibrations for an ultra-smooth power delivery, improved weight distribution, and increased engine life
- This engine also includes forged pistons, a high-temperature rated valvetrain, and ceramic inserts in both the exhaust ports and intake air cooler
- At WOT, the Bosch engine management allows a temporary boost in power (10%) at maximum acceleration by keeping the wastegate closed
- The aerodynamic floors and splash shields provide a smooth passage of air under the car to the new rear diffuser. Porsche claims this aids in cooling of the transmission, exhaust, and fuel tank
