- When it debuted in 1966, the Bronco was the world’s first SUV. Ford found a gap in the Jeep market, realizing that Jeep and Scout owners wanted a capable 4×4 that could also ride nice and not be so noisy
- What helped separate the Bronco from the competition was the use of a coil spring front suspension (Jeeps had leaf springs). Coil springs provided a major improvement in everyday livability and ride quality. Broncos also offered more interior insulation and more luxurious interior appointments compared to the competition. Bottom line, the Bronco was an incredible off-roader that didn’t sacrifice the usual creature comforts – everyone could enjoy a Bronco in town as much as the trail
- The “Ranger” package (shown here) represents the highest (and most luxurious) trim level for the Bronco. “Ranger” Broncos feature color-keyed interiors, unique cloth/vinyl seats, a carpeted tailgate, and carpeted interior wheel housings (full carpeting treatment). Rangers also receive color-keyed door panels with wood accents, insulation on the rear quarter panels, exterior white “Ranger” decals, swing-away spare tire carrier with cover, and a coat hook
- The Bronco features an approach angle of 44.3 degrees and a front-axle ground clearance of 8.4″. Breakover angle is 33 degrees, while the departure angle is 30.1 degrees
Key Model Year Changes:
- 1974 is limited to mostly minor cosmetic changes
- The only interior trim color available this year was parchment
- The gear indicator is now backlit (automatic cars)
- A dome light replaces the traditional map light on all Broncos equipped with a roof
- The front limited-slip differential is discontinued this year, as well as the 4.11 axle ratio option
- Final year of the 6 cylinder engine option
- The following year (1975) receives an updated exhaust system, beefier rear axle, taller ride height, and smog equipment (CA Broncos get a catalytic converter). The manual transmission is now a special order option. All 1975 Broncos are equipped with the 302 V8 only. 1975 is the first year of the F-Series truck steering wheel (Sport and Ranger trim only). First year of the engine-block heater option
- Disc brakes didn’t become an option until 1976, and became standard in 1977
- 1971 and newer Broncos use a Dana 44 front axle, while pre-1971 models use a Dana 30
- 1976 was the first year of solid-state ignition. ’76 models receive a higher capacity front axle and faster-ratio power steering. New options include front stabilizer bar and power front disc brakes
- The 302ci V8 is revised in 1977 with new pistons, a redesigned combustion chamber, and a new intake manifold. Power increases to 133 hp. Front passenger seat and padded dash are now optional instead of standard. Models with the Ranger package receive a revised roll bar
- The first generation Bronco ends production in 1977. The 2nd generation now rides on the F-Series truck platform
